Kicking Tail and Taking Names: How Southwest Airlines Uses a Dual Recognition and Incentive Program to Align Company Values with Annual Goals and Rewards

Session Description

At Southwest Airlines, we believe that what gets recognized gets repeated. Our Kick Tail program is designed to align three Company performance goals with the values that define how we behave and work each day. Join the FUN and learn how Southwest blends incentives with daily recognition that enables Leaders, Employees, AND our Customers to appreciate our People for living the Southwest values. Take away ideas and practical tools to empower your entire workforce to “Kick” some “Tail” too!

Three Key Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how Southwest ties daily positive behaviors with the achievement of annual Company goals to unify the workforce in purpose and Spirit, which fosters improved performance
  • Learn how Southwest uses a Companywide daily recognition program as a platform for rewarding Employees via monthly and yearly prize drawings
  • Get ideas and tools for incorporating recognition into daily activities and empowering Employees to actively engage in appreciation.

Monica Van Slate, Southwest Airlines

Monica Van Slate began working for Southwest Airlines in 1989 in Customer Relations. She moved from there to corporate writing on behalf of the CEO and other officers, and she was involved in specific writing projects related to Southwest Airlines Culture and Communications. Many years later, she joined the Labor and Employee Relations group before joining Employee Engagement and Travel where she has worked for the past five years. Effective written communication is my greatest career strength, and she has brought it to bear on my foray into Employee recognition. Monica has been administering the Kick Tail program for Southwest since 2011 and has been directly involved in its evolution into an all-encompassing recognition/incentive program for Southwest. She earned her CRP credentials at the RPI Conference in 2016. Monica thoroughly enjoyed being a presenter at the 2017 conference and sharing this wonderful part of Southwest Airlines’ recognition .
